Why food waste costs you money
A significant proportion of household food spending ends up in the bin. Much of this waste comes from buying more than needed, poor storage and losing track of what is in the fridge. Cutting food waste is one of the most direct ways to reduce a household food bill without changing what you eat.
First in, first out
When you bring new food home, move older items to the front of the fridge or cupboard so they get used first. This simple habit prevents items being pushed to the back and forgotten until they have passed their date. Doing a quick fridge check before shopping helps you build meals around what needs using rather than buying duplicates.
Understanding date labels
Best-before dates indicate quality rather than safety — food past its best-before is often still perfectly edible. Use-by dates are the ones to observe for food safety. Knowing the difference means you can make a more informed decision rather than automatically discarding food that looks and smells fine.
