Marketplace buying safety

Large marketplaces host many third-party sellers. Knowing what to check protects you from avoidable problems.

Understanding who you are buying from

On large marketplace platforms, a single product page may show items from multiple third-party sellers. It is worth checking who the actual seller is before buying, particularly for branded goods. A significantly lower price than other sellers can sometimes indicate a counterfeit product, grey market import or a listing that misrepresents the item's condition.

Checking seller feedback

Most marketplace platforms display seller ratings and feedback from previous buyers. A high volume of recent positive feedback from verified buyers is a reasonable indicator of reliability. Very new sellers, sellers with limited feedback or a visible pattern of negative reviews about item condition or communication are worth treating with caution.

Understanding your protections

Most major marketplace platforms offer buyer protection for items that do not arrive or do not match their description. Understanding what that protection covers, how to raise a claim and what timescales apply means you can act quickly if something goes wrong. Keep any correspondence, photographs of the item received and tracking information until you are satisfied.
