What is batch cooking?

Batch cooking means preparing larger quantities of food in one session so you have meals ready for multiple days. It saves time, reduces food waste and generally costs less per portion than cooking single meals repeatedly. It works especially well for soups, stews, curries, pasta sauces, rice dishes and baked goods.

Starting simply

If batch cooking feels like a large commitment, start with just one recipe per week. A pot of soup or a tray of roasted vegetables takes little extra effort when scaled up and can cover two or three lunches. Once the habit is established, adding a second batch item each week is straightforward and the time savings become more noticeable.

Storing batched food safely

Most cooked meals keep well in the fridge for two to three days and in the freezer for several weeks. Label containers clearly with the contents and date so nothing gets forgotten at the back of a shelf. Portioning meals into individual or family-sized containers before freezing means you only defrost what you actually need.
